Think Safety – Think UPVC Doors

November 16th, 2010

Remember the good old days, when you could leave all doors to your house unlocked, without having to worry about anything or anyone? Well, regardless of whether you do or don’t these days have long since passed, and the world has become less and less of a secure place; security has become the main concern in the 21st century. The quantity of robberies occurring in countries such as the USA and UK has drastically increased in recent years. As a result, the responsible people of those countries have resorted to securing their homes in a myriad of ways.
One of these ways was the installation of UPVC doors and windows. UPVC windows are made of double glazing, their frames are practically unbreakable, just like their glass, when compared to old and traditional windows that only took a well-placed rock to break due to their poor design and materials choice.
As most are aware, traditional doors and windows degrade quite noticeably over time, making break-ins a much easier task, unless they were being properly taken care of (a new paint job every few months).
With UPVC doors and windows, this problem is eliminated. Not only do they never need to be repainted, they outlast their predecessors by many years, and not to mention that they also come outfitted with an advanced locking system, which will prove to be too tough of a nut to crack for thieves, and the place you call home will be kept secure when no one is looking.

Vinyl Doors and their Many Advantages

November 16th, 2010

Doors might actually be the most important aspect of any room; they’re the first element of the room you come across and thus are the basis on which the first impression is formed. So when it comes to the selection of material for your doors, what should you go for? It’s clear that there is no be all end all ultimate material without cons. Before making a choice do some research and read about different materials… here are some advantages of vinyl doors.
To start it off, let’s look at their appearance. They come in such a wide variety of designs that you’re guaranteed to find at least something which will fit perfectly in your room. Not only that, but vinyl is actually stronger than wood, more durable, and lasts much longer than other materials on the market.
Third point to examine, is the vinyl’s weight. It’s indeed very light which greatly alleviates the installation process and deprives you of dealing with problems related to the installation of heavy doors.
From a safety standpoint, vinyl’s smooth surfaces are proven to reduce splintering, and assembling it seldom requires any metal accessories or attachments.
From a maintenance perspective, you’ll be pleased to learn that vinyl requires very minimal maintenance, as it’s less sensitive to environmental hazards than other materials, making it likely to last longer even with less maintenance.
Economically-speaking, although it may cost more than wood, it’s not a very costly material  by itself, and speaking in terms of value, you’ll get less from wood as it won’t last as song as the other alternative.
Last, but not least, these vinyl doors are available in many styles, ranging from classic, to retro to modern. They’re suitable for practically any room of the house, let it be the bedroom, the bathroom, the kitchen, or the patio.
And so, in the end, I really shouldn’t have to tell you that next time you’re planning on purchasing doors, you’d be doing yourself a favor by consider vinyl as your material.

Open Sesame – Making Doors Open Easier

November 16th, 2010

We’ve all been there; the door is stuck and doesn’t want to move. When that happens, you should fix the situation immediately, since the condition of such a gateway gets worse day after day… here are some solutions. For Conventional doors (the standard door everyone has at their house), start by checking the hinges and the knob. Subsequently, check the ledges to see if they require trimming. Then, tighten all the pins of the hinge with the help of a screwdriver. Try to leave a 1/8th inch gap between the door and it’s frame. If there is any rust, clean it immediately and grease the hinges afterward.
For sliding doors, the treatment is slightly different but the results remain just as good. If you want to keep your door movable, start by cleaning it frequently in the first place. If there’s dirt in the tracks, preventing them from functioning properly, use a vacuum cleaner to air the place out. After that, apply some graphite powder to the tracks, that should make them run smooth from now on. If the door isn’t parallel to it’s frame, that needs to be fixed as well.
Garage Doors: Before you do anything, take a close look at your entrance. See if there’s anything interfering with the door’s path. If you find nothing, take a look at the mechanism itself; examine the springs, the rollers, the cable, the screws and the pulleys. Make sure to tighten anything loose, to remove any dirt and to lubricate the pulleys properly.

The Guide to French Doors

November 16th, 2010

So, let’s talk about the elephant in the room… what are french doors? Well, for starters, the term isn’t quite so appropriate anymore seeing as these doors have become very popular in many different parts of the world. Their goal is not only to serve as a simple door, but also as a decorative element which adds punch and life to the house.
Traditionally, a French door is mainly made of glass and wood panels. It has a large wooden frame, which divides the glass into rectangular forms. The beautiful thing about these doors is the fact that they’re mostly made of glass, which makes for some real eye-candy. Some people go even as far as buying some from a purely aesthetic standpoint, just to spruce their house up a bit.
But don’t be fooled, they also hold a practical advantage over other houses: during these cold winter days, these doors prevent the cold, harsh wind from coming but instead let the heat of the sun pass through into the room. You can alternatively use french windows as interior doors; they looks especially attractive between the living room and the kitchen or dining room. They’re also commonly used for the patio, so as to give you a nice view of the backyard whilst in the kitchen.
If wood isn’t your style, you can always opt for many other exquisite materials, such as steel, vynil, and even plastic (I admit this isn’t as visually appealing as the others), depending on your needs.
So if you feel like it’s time to revamp your house, start by looking for French doors, and you’ll be off to good start.

Keeping Your Doors Attractive

November 16th, 2010

When you think about it, the average door goes through a lot of opening, closing, slamming… until one day it just breaks down and refuses to move. If you’d like that scenario to be avoided, it’s best to keep your doors properly maintained, and here a few tips on how to achieve that.
If the doors in your house are made of wood, it will require a bit of extra work, and even more if the door is exposed to the outside. Wood is sensitive to weather and the environment; it expands when absorbing water and contracts when exposed to heat. The sun’s UV rays can also really shorten your door’s life expectancy. This constant change of shape could also lead to warping. To keep your door from harm’s way, be sure to apply a good paint or stain job to help seal the door from the environment.
Over time, pollutants accumulate on your door, so it’s a good idea to wipe them from time to time. Also, apply a coat of polyurethane every 12-24 months. Simply do some light sanding on the surface before applying to it a light coat of paint thinner. Once the door has been dried, apply a coat of polyurethane, covering the whole door, filling any fissures that might have formed. This will add about 2 years to the door’s life.
It would also be wise to lubricate any hinges and pins once a year to keep them shiny and functional. To proceed with lubrication, you first need to remove the pins by gently tapping them from under with a hammer and a nail, and then apply the product.
If your locks aren’t properly greased and the key starts to stick in there, the simplest way to go about it would be to spray lubricant in the key hole. Now this won’t always work, depending on the lock, it’s age, and how dirty it is… in the worst case scenario you’ll have to disassemble it.
Just remember that by following these few simple steps you’ll be already on your way to doing wonders for your door, making it look and feel like new.

Stow Away Your Problems with Wooden Bi Folding Doors

November 16th, 2010

In order to spruce up their workplace, many people resort to installing bi-folding doors. These doors, usually made up of glazing panels set up in hinged frames. The frames themselves can be made from various materials, but the one considered the most attractive is timber. Wood has a natural and desirable feeling to it, and is convenient for all purposes. Some people may manifest wariness against wooden products made for the exterior, such as windows and doors, because of the many disadvantages woods brings, such as shrinking, expanding, rotting.. etc..etc…
These days, we no longer have to face these problems since they’ve been solved with the arrival of high-quality bi-folding doors with specially treated wood. What’s so special about it? First off, the wood is laminated, which means that it’s been broken into pieces and reassembled with grains in several different directions. Because the wood warps in accordance to the grains, this process has for effect to stabilize the wood and reduce the chances of it’s form changing during temperature and whether variations. Furthermore, the wood is treated with special liquids, which prevent it from rotting. Also, the frame is equipped with a water tap and outlet, preventing the build-up of condensation. In the end, what comes out of it is a strong and resistant frame.
Folding doors are supplied with a wide variety of possible finishes. If you’ve already got an idea regarding which paint or stain you’d like to use, then great… but if you don’t know that there is the choice between a stain and factory-sprayed finish. The finishes are preferable to have, since they protect your wood from different hazards all while allowing the natural, grainy look of the wood to show through. If you’re wondering what a factory-sprayed finish is, it’s a paint job applied by the factory. They make it so that the finish is very even without visible brush strokes. Each coat of factory-sprayed paint is worth around 10 brush coats. As a result, you’re left with a very long-lasting finish that protects your wooden frame.

Know Your Garage Doors

November 16th, 2010

If you want something to last, it goes without saying that you’ll need to take care of and maintain that something. In other words, if anything about it dysfunctional, you should look to fix the situation as soon as possible. In turn, such an approach will guarantee a long life expectancy to anything you’re maintaining.
Unsurprisingly, the same philosophy applies to garage doors. Due to the fact that they move frequently, they get deteriorated faster and lack of essential maintenance repairs will wear down your door to a point where it will become completely dysfunctional. If you’d like to repair your garage door, here’s some thing to keep in mind; you need to be able to determine when it’s is faulty. Knowledge in such an area will help you save money in the long run, since it will allow you to detect problems earlier on, making the repairs less costly and stressful.
In most cases, two parts of the garage door are likely to be in need of routine repairs. The first one is the opener, and the second one is the door itself. Because the door constantly moves, make sure that the metallic tracks as well as the bracelets connecting the tracks to the wall are firmly in place by tightening the bolts and screws. For these repairs you’re required to work from the inside with the door closed.
It’s also worth mentioning that the tracks themselves deteriorate as well. If they’re still in passable condition, then it’s possible to hammer them into shape using a mallet. However, if they’re beyond redemption, the best solution would be to buy new ones. Also be sure to clean any dirt from the tracks, as that alone may prevent them from working properly.
Last tip I’m leaving you with is if you have a roll-up door, never forget to check the springs because they will need to be re-adjusted from time to time.

How to Install Sliding Closet Doors

November 16th, 2010

If you’re looking to give your bedroom a face lift, make access to what’s inside your closets more convenient, then you should look into installing sliding doors, also known as bypass doors. They really are the best option when it comes to maximizing space, and are also easier to install than you think.
Here are some steps to follow when it comes to their installation
The first step is to make measurements at the place where the door will go; make sure to measure the space from top to bottom, as those measurements will be crucial when making the final purchase..
The second step is to choose the material. The most popular choice in this regard is wood; there are many different variants of it out there, and it blends in practically with any room. If the timber happens to be unfurnished, don’t neglect wood stain and any wood staining accessories.
Third, you should prepare your doors by sanding and staining them, but most of them have already gone through this stage when they get in your hands.
The fourth step is to remove the old doors you’re looking to replace. Also, remember to remove any tracks they were on, if they were indeed sliding doors.
The fifth stage consists of installing the tracks. You’ll have to install the upper and lower tracks using a drill. Also, make sure these tracks fit perfectly in the door opening.
The sixth step is mounting the brackets. If the doors previously in place were also of the bypass type, then you can use their former location as a guide to mount the brackets. Make sure that all the screws are tightly sealed so that the tops won’t interfere the with the rollers’ movement.
The seventh stage is mounting the rollers on the tracks, according to your manufacturer’s instructions. Depending on your provider, some doors might actually come with the rollers already installed, so you might need to skip this step.
Last, but not least, hang your doors on their tracks, and you can finally take a well-deserved break and enjoy your new furnishings.
